Why are you here?
There are five questions that a prospective boss needs answered before they can hire you. These questions come from Richard Nelson Bolles and his book What Color is Your Parachute? They are:
- Why are you here? This means why are you applying at this company and not Bob’s Plumbing?
- What can you do for us? This means what are your talents and skills? Would you help solve our problems or would you add to them?
- What kind of person are you? This means do you have the type of personality that makes it easy for people to work with you? What are your values?
- What distinguishes you from nineteen other people who can do the same tasks that you can? This means do you work harder? Do you self-educate? Do you come in earlier and stay later?
- Can I afford you? Do we have the means within our budget to pay you your worth?
You might not be asked these exact questions. But according to Richard, who has more years in experience than both you and I have in age, your chances of getting the job will be determined by the answers, providing you are applying to a competent company.
