The Technician Shop Status

Due to some health issues I am temporarily placing The Technician Shop blog into hibernation. If you are a new visitor please stop by our About page and then check out the content under Categories. In the mean time I am going to re-energize my radio beacon over at Twitter and try to send out signals of value in 140 or less.

If you are a technician, you are in one of the most noblest professions in the world…no matter your trade. Never stop trying to be better today than you were yesterday and remember: A career isn’t something you ride, it’s something you guide.

Why are you here?

There are five questions that a prospective boss needs answered before they can hire you. These questions come from Richard Nelson Bolles and his book What Color is Your Parachute? They are:

  1. Why are you here? This means why are you applying at this company and not Bob’s Plumbing?
  2. What can you do for us? This means what are your talents and skills? Would you help solve our problems or would you add to them?
  3. What kind of person are you? This means do you have the type of personality that makes it easy for people to work with you? What are your values?
  4. What distinguishes you from nineteen other people who can do the same tasks that you can? This means do you work harder? Do you self-educate? Do you come in earlier and stay later?
  5. Can I afford you? Do we have the means within our budget to pay you your worth?

You might not be asked these exact questions. But according to Richard, who has more years in experience than both you and I have in age, your chances of getting the job will  be determined by the answers, providing you are applying to a competent company.

If you are a hiring manager, make sure you get the right answers to these questions before hiring someone.

Travel Coffee Mugs

Do you appreciate a good cup of coffee in the morning? Maybe while on the way to work? Or while on a job site? Like a quality tool, a quality travel coffee mug is a necessity. The following are three web site resources to help you to choose a decent coffee mug.

Good Housekeeping – The authors have put together a twenty-seven slide show demonstrating the pros and cons of various mugs.brugo

Brugo – This manufacturer engineers a coffee mug to deliver the perfect temperature for a sip of coffee. The mugs are pretty cool looking too.

Buzz Mug – All things coffee and tea. Passion meets coffee meets coffee mugs. Neat.
