It’s in the news. Politicians are doing it. Teachers are doing it. Businessmen are doing it. Married people are cheating, having sex with those who they’ve hooked up with at work.

Don’t go down this road man. Think first. Imagine all of the trouble, heartache and misery you will cause.

At first I was just going to focus on the job part of this. You know, the inevitable job loss and damaged reputation. But I can’t ignore your family brother. Why would you want to hurt your family? For the most part, married people who hook up don’t intend to hurt their family. But their actions do. You are plunging a dagger into your kids’ heart. And you are ripping your wife’s insides out.

If you feel that you’re beginning to slip into a bad situation, listen to the little guy in your head who stands for good. He’s telling you to stop. You can make this situation much easier to deal with if you make a commitment to yourself now – say I will not cheat on my wife and family. Program your mind with loyalty, dignity and respect.

Don’t hurt your kids. Don’t hurt your wife. Don’t hurt yourself. Be loyal, always.

If you’re a dad, is there any other position in the universe that’s more important? Is there any other position with so much to learn?…no matter if your kid is one or twenty-one. As of today, I am a twenty-eight year veteran of this position, times two. With an eleven year difference between my two, number two brings up a whole new round and generation of challenges. The learning never stops. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

As a technician you know the learning never stops either. House repairs, errands, the kids’ ball and the wife’s car never let up either. We haven’t even mentioned work yet. And we sure as heck haven’t even mentioned your mother-in-law. It’s okay, you’re not alone. There are quite a few of us out here trying to make sense of it all, trying to make it work.

Remember back when we told you it’s all about you? A big part of you is your family. And a big part of family is your kids. If I had this all figured out, I’d call this site The Kids Shop, but of course I don’t. So I look to others for help and guidance. Here is a pretty neat resource to help you along in your role as a dad: GreatDad.com

On the how-is-your-manager-doing front… One mark of a good manager is if he asks how your kids are doing. He knows that there is more about you than punching in and giving it your all at work. It’s even better yet if he knows their names.

Remember how we told you It’s All About You? And a big part of you is your kids and their education. You can’t leave it up to their mom, their teachers or their grandparents. You’ve got to be involved.

We’re not here as social workers or family therapists. We really can’t tell you what to do with your kids and their education. As friends we can remind you that your life is more than the job. We can plant an awareness in your head and hope it grows.

If at this point, you’re not up to what’s going on with your kids’ education, here’s an idea. Consider this idea like a spark descending on a dry pile of kindling. Spend a little time reading up on what’s going on in the world of education. There’s a good chance when you sink your teeth into this an interest will begin. You’ll slowly start to see how what you’re reading pertains to your kids. Once you get a toehold you’ll want more. Go with it.

Keith Ferrazzi, an expert on business relationships, comments on an article written by Mark Bauerlein, an English professor at Emory University. The title of this article will give you a hint as to where this is going: Why Gen-Y Johnny Can’t Read Nonverbal Cues: An emphasis on social networking puts younger people at a face-to-face disadvantage.

For the record, I love the overall spirit and culture of Generation Y. I consider it a privilege to attempt to understand, attempt to provide guidance and attempt to remove the obstacles of outdated thinking and actions from their path.

“Bob was killed last night.”

I was in the office early one Saturday morning when the company’s owner called, barely able to get these words out of his mouth. Drugs and alcohol were involved. Something began to claw its way out of my guts as I tried to make sense of what I’d just heard. My first thought was of Bob’s wife and two young children. My second thought was the gruesome manner in which Bob was killed. He was thrown from his truck and ended up underneath it. They should have had a closed casket ceremony at his funeral.

If you have a problem with drinking and or drugs, you know. Deep down you know. Eventually you are going to hurt yourself. In the process you are going to hurt your friends and family. You might hurt or even kill someone else. If you do have a problem, you’re going to need help to overcome it.

If you have a problem or even suspect that you might, please visit this site for help.

I saw Bob’s wife and kids the morning after he was killed. It was one of the most gut-wretching things I’ve ever witnessed.
