Why You Dave?
Why you Dave and how are you qualified to give technicians advice?
Why me? Because there is no other person on this planet who admires the pride, care, craftsmanship, diligence, desire to make a difference for their customer and artistic ability that the true technician puts into his profession more than I do. Well, his mom might…maybe. I view the technician as a little kid might have viewed Babe Ruth. I do not possess a mechanical ability or aptitude and I cannot hit a five-hundred foot home run. This speaks to the depths of my admiration and to why the true professional technician is my hero.
How are you qualified then if you’ve never been a technician?
I’ve been a technician manager for a little under twenty-five years. I’m not sure I’ve been a very good one either. I seemed to have let myself get caught up in the busy things that managers do whenever they are doing things that do not involve technician growth and development. In spite of this shortcoming however, I’ve spent over twenty-five years studying the craft of management. While I should have gotten out of management and into coaching a long time ago, my study combined with experience offers me the opportunity now, to be of use.
So basically, I am in the perfect position to help you help your manager. To be clear, you are not helping your manager for the sake of helping him. You are helping him for the sake of your own personal growth and development. You are helping him to help you.
