The Technician Shop

The Technician

I created The Technician Shop to help technicians get more out of their work, career, education and life.  Over the years I’ve studied  deep into business leadership and management.  I’ve learned about philosophies, movements and leaders.  I’m familiar with most of the leadership and management gurus.  I’ve spent over ninety-seven percent of the last twenty-five years in HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) management.  With this type of background you’d think I’d have a long list of leaders who I admire.  I do.  There are a ton of brilliant people out there.  I have a longer list however, of folks who I admire even more.  In fact, they are my heroes.  I am talking about the technician.

Take the HVAC (heating, ventilating, air conditioning) field for example.  To me, the HVAC technician is an artist.  He orchestrates his mind and hands around refrigerant, electricity, air, water and mechanical apparatus to provide his customers with indoor comfort.  And his busiest times are when the elements in which he works are their nastiest – summer and winter.

It takes a special person who can handle field situations, customers, a dispatcher, a boss, his bosses’ boss and other various business associates.  I have found the most successful technicians are the ones who have a passion about what they do.  They feed off their ability to repair, install, replace or maintain things.  Most often their rewards come not from pay, but from their customer, peer and manager’s appreciation.  Rewards also come from knowing that the kind of job they did was laced with quality and done to the best of their ability.
