It’s Not About You
Well Dave, you just got finished in the About page, telling our friends how much we care about them. Are you nuts?
Okay, here’s the deal. If you’re a technician you take care of your customer’s lawns, electrical systems, plumbing systems, computers, pest control, heating and air conditioning etc. You work with coworkers - including a boss or two. You deal with business associates. You live with and or have family and friends. A great deal of your ability to succeed is based upon what others expect of you and perceive about you.
While your friends and some family members might be down with your two inch nose ring, pierced chin and eyebrows, Mrs. Jones will not be. The Technician Shop is down with giving you a chance. Body armor and an unkempt appearance place obstacles in your path and make it harder to succeed. The same is true when you choose to ignore company guidelines and policies.
Exceptions – there will always be exceptions. A tattoo artist is a technician who practices an honorable craft. No matter how unfair it is for the rest of us, the general public has accepted his piercings and tattoos. Mrs. Joe Homeowner however, will not feel very comfortable letting a person in her house or yard draped in metal.
For the record, I grew up in the sixties and seventies. I have very liberal opinions on dress and appearance. But I chose to work in a trade that enters people’s homes and places of business. If I were not able to design a personal image that puts customers at ease and one that instills confidence, I would have chosen another profession.
It’s not about you until it is about you – Your ability to achieve success and to get the most out of engaging your passion, talents and skills to help others and find meaning in the world, is all about you.
